Watercolour 2019
My watercolour paintings mimic life .The colours blend, sometimes without control and wilful abandon. Emerging from this generalised , atmospheric turmoil are snippets of clarified and familiar detail.
I have chosen my recent subjects to describe the mundane and it’s overlooked beauty.
This year, my kitchen has proved to be a source of inspiration ,particularly during the late afternoon when the sun casts wonderful shadows through black wooden blinds. Strong contrasts of tonal value are features of many of the pieces. I lean towards pure watercolour ,keeping the white of the paper for the bright highlights. My work is made up of layering wet onto dry complimented with looser wet in wet washes applied with large brushes. I use the heaviest paper with a cold pressed or rough surface. It is in the last two years that I feel confident in predicting what the paint will do and persuade it to behave and conform while utilising the unpredictable nature of the medium.
